synopsis
The Selva Maya stretches across southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. With more than ten million hectares, it is the largest tropical rainforest in Mesoamerica.

The forest is named after the Mayan civilization that once inhabited this area. Its architecture, written culture and astronomical knowledge continue to fascinate researchers today. However, archaeological finds also show that the Maya themselves made a significant contribution to the demise of their civilization by overexploiting the forests in which they lived. Today, the Selva Maya is again threatened by humans. The forest is disappearing, giving way to sugar cane plantations and cattle ranches. The question arises as to whether our contemporary civilization is repeating the mistakes of the Mayans or whether we are able to learn from the fate of our ancestors.
