synopsis

Stockholm, April 24, 1975: A commando unit of the Red Army Faction storms the West German embassy, takes hostages, and issues a brutal ultimatum — release their imprisoned leaders or face the execution of hostages, hour by hour.

This gripping two-part documentary reconstructs the events of that day with rare original audio recordings, historical news footage, and eyewitness accounts. At the center is a young diplomat, drawn into tense negotiations with the terrorists — unaware whether his father, one of the hostages, is still alive. Meanwhile, as pressure mounts inside the embassy, the governments of Helmut Schmidt in Bonn and Olof Palme in Stockholm struggle to find a way out. Political scientist Wolfgang Kraushaar and former GSG-9 commander Dieter Fox offer insight into the RAF’s radical ideology, the strategies at play behind the scenes, and the profound moral dilemma facing a democracy under siege.

A powerful and multi-layered portrait of one of postwar Europe’s most dramatic hostage crises — and a moment that continues to echo to this day.
